Fairbanks Morse Engine Selected to Supply Emergency Diesel Generator Sets for New U.S. Nuclear Reactors
Beloit, Wisconsin, October 24, 2008 – Fairbanks Morse Engine, an EnPro Industries company, has signed a Letter of Intent with AREVA NP Inc. to supply sixteen Emergency Diesel Generator Sets (EDGs) for AREVA Evolutionary Power Reactors (EPR) planned for construction in the United States. The EDGs can deliver up to 14 MWe of electricity. They will be manufactured and tested at the Fairbanks Morse Engine facility in Beloit, Wisconsin, in accordance with U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (U.S. NRC) requirements.
Fairbanks Morse Engine has been supplying Emergency Diesel Generator Sets to the nuclear power industry since 1968, and remains the industry leader. Currently, over 60% of owners and operators of nuclear power plants in the United States depend on Fairbanks Morse engines. “Our quality, reliability and industry experience make Fairbanks Morse Engine the EDG provider of choice for the nuclear industry,” said Tony Gioffredi, President of Fairbanks Morse Engine. “With the next generation of nuclear power plants expected to produce electricity for at least 60 years, the industry is looking for a proven engine manufacturer that can design, build and test engines to the strict U.S. NRC requirements.”
The AREVA EPR is a 1,600+ MWe net pressurized water reactor design based on well-proven technology. The EPR incorporates significant improvements in safety and economics over previous technologies, providing lower total lifecycle costs and the greatest physical safety for 21st century scenarios.
